No, not a virus, but if you don't give details (like what KIND of LAN card, version/distro of Linux, and what you're doing to GET the message), no one can help you.
And disabling your LAN card to resolve a no connectivity problem doesn't make sense. That's like taking the engine out of your car, because it wouldn't start...
