Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

configuring video hardware from command line

I made a big goof...
I wanted to add a second monitorso I shut down, put the new card in, rebooted, expecting it would not be recognized immediatly , and then I'd be able to set it up. Wrong. It was trying to use the new card instead of the onboard video plug and said it couldn't start X. so I switched it back, went into System -> Display, set it to dual head and told it what the new monitor was, then tried with both. Same thing happened. So I shut down, took out the card, and put it back to how I had it first. Now it still can't start X, presumably because of how I set it up in display.

So...any easy way to go through the command line to get my original settings back?

Need more info?

Pleeeease!!

by the way, I did
/usr/X11R6/bin/xf86config

but there is nothing there.
Anywhere else my config might be?
