I am planning to run Linux, WindowsXP and Win2k Prof. I am going to install all three. Under Win2k I want to run PeopleSoft Training Module which would require an Apache Web Server to run, also a Tuxedo AppServer followed with a Database Server.
I initially thought to go for an AMD athlon 64 bit, but the after sales services for non-intel processors is very bad in india. so finally opted for a P4. The 25k I mentioned was Rs. 25K.
Since I would also be using the sytem for playing games, I expected the a decent GPU that would allow me to play Doom3 and similar games at normal resolutions. Also another reason for a GPU is that Display would be handled by this dedicated processor so my CPU would be more responsive and fast.
I am planning on a SATA HDD, which I believe are faster than the usual ATA 100 HDD.
I donot want to go for the most high-end processors, instead invest on a decent fast processor also concentrate on the peripherals like DDR Ram, FSB etc...so that I can achive maximum efficency.
I think it is illogical to buy expensive High end processors and not to equally concentrate on the other aspects.
well... with 3 OSs, you'll need a bigger HD, especially to do gameing. and you're right -- video card is every bit as important to get a good one when gameing.
you look like you'll be pushing this thing pretty hard, suggest 1.5 G ram
the other bad idea with thrying to buy a 64 bit AMD is trying to install win2k -- i wasn't aware that OS had 64 bit version... but too lazy to look it up
SATA = faster, yes, but especially for linux you should check a HCL and see what problems people are having. you'll likely need additional drivers for windows during the install, as well.
SATA can be very awkward in linux to be recognised check out this link for up-to-date info http://www.linuxmafia.com/faq/Hardware/sata.html
and u can also do a search on the forum regarding SATA.
As for AMD or pentium this is a personal choice IMO if u r gaming then I would spend more on a good graphics card.
