cd/dvd drive issues with fedora core 2

i finally made the switch to linux and am digging the whole thing, but i've got some issues with the software recognizing my cd-r and dvd drives. the boot record has everything correct, but when i put a disc in either drive it doesn't do much of anything. i'm running fedora core 2 and currently reading a book about it, but i'd like to get everything moving. any advice would be appreciated . . .

the cd drive is TEAC W58E
and
Pioneer DVD 116

thanks>
