I couldn't believe a Nexus 5 would be able to cast (I have one in a drawer somewhere), but a search suggests it can (or could). No idea what android it would be running - I ran CyanogenMod/LineageOS on mine, and even they stopped offering updates a couple of years back.
Thank you for your response. I will endeavor to answer your questions....
Also, not sure if this is Hardware or Software, so I asked here in Hardware. If I have err'd, please say so. Being new, the last thing I wish to do is get started on the wrong foot!
Yes Sir, single router on the 2.4GHZ band. I failed to mention in my post that the Nexus 5 is running Ubuntu Touch, AKA 16.04, but really, any flavor of LINUX should work in my mind. Having said that, the Touch flavor of Linux is tailored, as I understand it, to work seamlessly with the Nexus 5. And so far, it has, short of this casting issue.
The Nexus 5 sees both the Roku stick (which supports casting) and the LG TV. The LG is on CAT5 and also has Wifi turned on... The Nexus 5 reports it is attempting to is connect, but the little activity wheel just spins and spins until the effort times out.
My Nexus 7 tablet (running Android) connects to both devices (across the same 2.4 router on wifi and casting) without a hiccup.
And the Nexus 5 connects to my network just fine. I am able to make phone calls with it just fine as well. I also use a Bluetooth, foldable keyboard with the Nexus 5, in Terminal mode. I have listened to music over Bluetooth from the Nexus 5 to my headset.
Hence my post????
(And I believe somewhere along the line, the question was presented elsewhere, as to why a Nexus 5 (AKA2012) hardware. If I am going to load any flavor of LINUX on a smart phone, I will gladly spend $85.00 on Ebay for a Nexus 5 versus $600/700/800 dollars on a modern smart phone, when the chance of me possibly bricking this device is in the front of my brain! I have 2 Nexus 5's, one of which has screen issues, but does work. So I can tear up the flakey Nexus 5, learn on the other properly working Nexus 5 and I am out $85.00 if it goes TU!!!!)
I trust my response is detailed enough (shame on me) to make a better statement of my issue...
AH, PS... Doesn't Wifi casting boot leg in on some god awful IP scheme. Wondering if Touch lacks that bit of code to handle that???

Reason: forgot something.

Yes Sir, the Nexus 5 works wonderful with Ubuntu Touch. Used the Nexus tool kit to Unlock and Root. Enabled Developer mode, push the software over the Windows box and it came up just fine.
Dig that baby out. My reasoning for using the % was money and I want to get off Google/Amazon/Facebook/Skynet/3 letter Government agencies watch lists. USE VPN. Don't use Google. Don't use playstore/Gmail/Amazon shopping.
I want off their grid as much as possible. And this Pegasus mess last week only re-inforces my efforts now.
