Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Canon Powershot A630

I'm running a 2.6.18-4 kernerl on a powerpc ibook laptop (300Mhz CPU) with Debian Etch, Debian version 4.0.

I have a Canon Powershot A630 camera and I was wondering if there was any way that I could get the computer to see the camera becasue when I plug it into the USB hub that I have it notices and says something to the effect that it's been noticed and loaded in. But I see nothing when I do a fdisk -l like I do when I have a card reader (and before anyone asks, I don't have the card reader with me, it's 200+ miles back in my hometown I forgot it when I packed for the convention).

I tried using Gphoto2, which failed miseribly during instalation. I'd really like to find a way that doesn't involve installing Gphoto2.

the only GUI program I managed to work with my Canon 520 is:
* media-gfx/digikam
Latest version available: 0.9.1
Latest version installed: 0.9.0_rc2
Homepage: http://www.digikam.org/
Description: A digital photo management application for KDE.
License: GPL-2

but gphoto2 itself works fine if installed
