I have yet to figure out what prompts this, but there are times that I am unable to open my cd drive. I press the button and nothing happens. The light doesn't come on or anything. If I restart Linux, it'll start to work fine again, but after awhile I'll be unable to open it again. My specs are in my sig, so hopefully that will help you guys know the background.
If the notebook computer is under warranty, call Dell. If not, try using the eject utility. If a disc is mounted, the drive will be locked, so the button will not work. When the disc is unmounted, the eject button will work. Check if you are using supermount or a similar auto mount daemon, this problem could come up. I suggest do not use any auto mount daemon because it is a pain. Though the drive tray could be damage.
Almost certainly mounted - check "df", or have a look on the desktop.
Haven't looked at Mepis in a while, but Ubuntu can be a PITA occasionally. Device doesn't show as mounted, but report as busy. You have to mount it to umount it - I guess you can't expect better from distros aimed at users looking for a "new Windoze".
