Cannot login to Netgear RT311 router

Hi people, I have a Netgear RT311 router, have had it for quite some time. I need to get into it to enable port forwarding but I require a username and a password, for obvious reasons. I checked Netgear's site and found the default username and password, tried both possibilities, none worked. My father, who set up the router insists there is no username and/or password, which I find very hard to believe as there is a default one. So, as he said, I tried no username, no password, and to no surprise, nothing. I have tried to ssh to it, telnet to it, and through a browser. I am getting nowhere, so I ask here for help. Does anyone have any idea how to solve this problem, without reinstalling the router's firmware, and without buying a new router.

Thanks

John

Press the reset button on the back of it with a paper clip as described in the user's manual. All settings will go back to default so you might have to drop and renew your ip address but you will be able to log in with the default username/password then and set it up the way you want to.

I am guessing that if I do that, I will no longer be able to connect to the internet as there is probably some config on there about my ISP and stuff. Is this true?

ps.

Pulp Fiction, of course! Poor Marvin!

No, if you reset the router it will query your modem again and get all of the information it needs for connectivity. You might need to unplug the modem and router after you reset it. If so, let the modem come up completely before you turn your router back on.
The default setting for the router is to get it's ip address by way of dhcp.

If you happen to lose your internet, still log into your router and check the settings. It is possible that your ISP requires a login which you can set up in the router's settings. However, I have never found a case where you CANNOT get internet without that login.
I'm confident that you'll have no problems. Post back with your results. Hope I have helped you.

Now I am really annoyed, it seems that when manufacturing the RT311, Netgear "forgot" to install a reset button. Instead all I have is a 9-pin so-called "manager" port. Now I have to look in my BIG box of cables to find the one to connect it to my PC, if it's there. If not, I think I'm gonna have to get a new router.

Thanks for your help Vincent_Vega

You're welcome. Sounds like you might be better off looking into a new router. There are plenty out there that are very affordable. Good luck!
