Can not install any 64bit Linux distro's

so i'm a little bit stumped on this particular issue because every x86 version of all the distros i have tried install and run perfectly except slackware but i know whats messed up there.

anyways whenever i try to install a x64 version of linux i always get a an x server error. usually along the lines of no device found no device installed no device configured.

Distros i Have tried

Debian 4.0
Ubuntu
Gentoo ( Live Cd would boot but x server would fail to start)
OpenSuse ( sames as above)

Debian installs and i have configured the x server just the same same as i have configured it with the x86 version of debian which worked. OpenSuse will also install but again same x server configuration as the x86 version i installed. Gentoo i could probably install but if the generic live cd wouldnt work why bother. anyways im at a loss any ideas????

i have an intel Core 2 quad q6600

Nvidia Geforce 8400 GS

Intel D975XBX2

2GB Corsair XMS2 PC-6400

i have tried every configuration of the x server i can think of even defaults which 99% of the time usually work just wondering why its only the x64 versions im having problems with .

Well that (title) ain't true at all. Sounds like the distros install fine.
I run a q6600 with an 8600 something-or-other - only has 64-bit distros on it.
I'll have a look when I get home - this post is just to remind me to look for you.

your right technically they do install its mainly the x server thats really starting to erk me. everything else seems to run ok. its only on 64 bit distro's for some reason. maybe i am missing something. thanks for the help.

some more info

apparently its not loading my nvidia driver correctly because its failing to load the glx module and libGl.so ( i think). not real sure how to fix it either

that would help wouldnt it.

my graphics card was getting misidentified as an older card that uses the legacy drivers and those were getting installed instead of the ones i actually needed. i had to download the correct driver for my card and install it from the command line then reconfigure X. i kind of spoke to soon i havent completely fixed it yet i'll post back when i have it sorted.
