ok

have you tried another distro.....or are you willing to?

2) as we are in diff time zones whats the output to this, with my output as example

Code:
ls /usr/share/alsa/cards/CMI*
/usr/share/alsa/cards/CMI8338.conf /usr/share/alsa/cards/CMI8738-MC6.conf /usr/share/alsa/cards/CMI8788.conf
/usr/share/alsa/cards/CMI8338-SWIEC.conf /usr/share/alsa/cards/CMI8738-MC8.conf
I can't see your card in my output but I am on diff distro

3) what alsa version do you have?

b) have you considered upping your version if yours is older?

Code:
 cat /proc/asound/version
mine is 1.0.25 and
http://alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Main_Page is same

now old version at alsa-project says LG laptop needed a quirk

what is your laptop pls?

2) in case its a LG or for you to try it with a quirk setting, mod your /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

and try a line like this.....if no sound etc...reboot and delete line reboot etc

contents
Code:
options snd-hda-intel snd_pci_quirk=1
now a WARNING...I made that quirk string up as its not in any config docs I have and I used google to look for it with no immediate luck so its
based on this post

http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.linux.alsa.devel/52423

TRY AT OWN RISK

sorry

Yup it's an LG laptop. LM60 Express.

I tried snd_pci_quirk=1 and snd-pci-quirk=1 and they both are not recognized.

Here's the other info:
Code:
root@localhost:~ # ls /usr/share/alsa/cards/CMI*
/usr/share/alsa/cards/CMI8338-SWIEC.conf
/usr/share/alsa/cards/CMI8338.conf
/usr/share/alsa/cards/CMI8738-MC6.conf
/usr/share/alsa/cards/CMI8738-MC8.conf
/usr/share/alsa/cards/CMI8788.conf

root@localhost:~ # cat /proc/asound/version
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.25.
Maybe the next step is to try a live CD and see if there is any difference...but I'm beginning to think that it looks like it's a problem with this specific laptop.

another suggestion is to use OSS instead of alsa

your distro should have a package, I suggest you remove alsa or disable it and not use the alsa-oss package

So I tried another distro and the same thing happens,
it's starting to look like this is just a bug.
I haven't tried OSS yet though.
