Can't hear anything when playing Audio CD:s in SuSE 9.1
I can't hear anything when playing Audio CD:s. Problem is not in the volume or my ears. I can listen MP3:s and OGG:s but not Audio CD:s. It shows that it's OK but still can't hear anything. Could the problem be in ALSA Drivers?
It might not be the alsa drivers, but it may just be that the volume level in ALSA for your CD is set to zero. Run alsamixer and make sure your CD volume is up.
Also, sound apps have their own separate volume control. Make sure that the volume slider bar in your CD playing app (XMMS or whatever) is turned up too.
Finally, are you certain that you've got that little audio cable correctly installed between the CD drive and your soundcard? You will need to open your box to visually inspect it. Good luck with it -- J.W.
I'm having the same problem, but haven't found a fix yet. It's not the volume controls in Alsa, or the player itself. Three things: 1) I *can* play CDs through ALSA player, but none of the other players on Suse 9.1. 2) When I try to rip a CD, while it appears to rip just fine, in fact it just rips silence, i.e., a .WAV is created, but the .WAV is all silence. 3) This problem only started when I took out my CDRW and replaced it with a DVDRW--that is, everything worked fine with the CDRW, but has this problem with the DVD.
I've discovered that I can rip cds using cdda2wav, but not with cdparanoia (again, cdparanoia just gives me silence). I can't find anything about why one would work but not the other. (And I'd prefer cdparanoia since it has more correction capabilities.)
jaakop, check to see whether DMA is turned on for your drive. (Yast-->Hardware-->IDE DMA) It was turned off for me, but once I turned it on, problem solved. Yea!
