best 56k modem for linux?

Hey people

I am re-building my linux server for home, and I want it to do a few more things, namely:

act as a fax server (incoming AND outgoing)

act as a remote dial in server (so people can connect to my network and browse the internet)

act as an answering machine (so the modem need HARDWARE support for voice - is that ATI8 ??)

So I am after some advice as to which modem to purchase.

I live in Australia, and have FaxDuet on my phone line - basically I have two different numbers that ring on my line with different ring tones.

So I can use one number for fax / data and the other for answering machine..

anyway I'm wondering what modem has good linux support, and hardware support for voice.

I was looking at this Netcomm: [EDIT: can't post a url because I don't have more than 5 posts.... grrr..]

Can anyone out there help me choose the right modem?

Cheers,

Chris

Spiffy modem. Just passing through. I have to assume you: A) Have cable or something to get to the internet besides the phone line. B) Not planning to do all of this simultaneously.

hey... yeah I have adsl at home.

not wanting to do it simultaniously, just to be able to do them all seperately.

so I can recieve faxes is someone sends one..

be an answering machine when I'm not home..

and also so that my brother and sister's respective families can dial in and use the internet at night or whenever.

I guess it doesn't matter if it's not voice - I could use an answering machine - but I want to set up a fully linux solution..

I think at the end of the day I'll have to buy the modem and see... anyone out there already own one and can check for me?

or anyone know of a modem that definately works?

cheers

Unfortunately, I am unfamiliar with ADSL. I thought it took different equipment than a regular POTS phone line. DSL does.

I really don't know. You are going to have to search all of the newsgroups in detail--I don't really have the time.

thanks anyway

adsl runs of a copper line, but runs on a different modem.

I can use the phone at the same time as being on the internet.

So really I just want a modem with hardware support for voice..

Starting Flamming Service            [OK]
sheeesh, you are impatient.
Stopping Flamming Service          [DONE]

The modem that you pick has voice you just need to connect the microphone to the line out of your sound card but don't forget a capacitor if the modem requires a condensor microphone. Since sound cards output to two channels or more, you can use the left channel or buy a two track mixer. Then connect the output from the modem to the line in of your sound card.

When recording you can use a sampling rate of 11025 Hz at 8 bits mono. You can also use mp3 at a bit rate of 16 Kbits to really save on space. Telephone quality is about a 6000 Hz at 4 bits mono for its sampling rate. You can setup a web server so you can listen to your messages when you are out of town for a while.

great, thanks..

did it seem like I was being impatient?

markets are on tomorrow

I'll just get one and see.

My point was that a lot of modems say they are voice, but it is only software driven... obviously useless where linux is concerned.

cheers..

BTW

the whole "22 seconds thing"

and the reason for the extra seemingly pointless posts were because these forums do NOT allow u to post a URL in your message unless you have at least 5 posts.

and u cannot post one reply after another, you have to wait 22 seconds before u can post again.

so the extra posts were so that I had enough posts to post the link to the modem

and the 22 seconds were the amount of time between each post.

It was not because I was waiting for someone to reply..!
