Unhappy Audio Problem SiS 7018

my problem is that i have a pcchips m810lr motherboard and am running slackware 9.0 with 2.4.20 kernel. My sound will not work and i have looked through the forms and i can't find the answer. when i try to cat an audio file to the /dev/audio device it says that there is no such device but when the boot sequence is processed it says it finds the card sets up the trident driver on irq 11 and all without errors. i have tried modprobe trident with no success. can you guys help? I also thought i would throw this in here, when I get done rebuilding my kernel, after i make install then what do i have to do before i can reboot and have it work?

Thx (linux is a solid as rox and rox)

Scott

Maybe this isn't your solution, but with my rh9 install, the speaker jack had to be moved from the green (line out) jack to the pink (line in) jack. On my Asus P4PE board, for sound output, Linux uses line in and windoze uses line out. Why, I don't know.

If it works, use it. If not, at least you didn't have to recompile a kernel or some other task. This only takes a few seconds to try.

When i boot X it also aRTS displays that "can't set requested samplingrate (requested rate 44100, got rate 32000)" so when i set it to use a custom rate of 32000 it says that "can't set requested fragments settings" and no matter what i set the fragment setting at it still gives me this problem, just thought i would add some mor info

Scott,

Sorry, but since I am the only one who's posted to you so far, let me say that I installed RH6 (I think) in 1999 and didn't use it much. I have had this install of RH9 running for about a week or less, so there is nothing more I can offer to your problem. Mine was fixed easily, after I had read for about 10 hours. Just wanted to let you know that if I had an answer I'd help you...maybe one of these guys who's been around longer will have some info.

When I figure out how to get Gimp to do some things Photoshop does I will evaluate it's value; and if it's good enough, and I can find a program to replace PageMaker that will run on Linux, then my Windoze days are over! !

Cheers

Hey Scott, I had audio problems that were not similar to yours(my sound card wasn't even recognized at all....its sitting in one of the PCI slots too)....if you want sound quick....go to the nearest electronic store(Fry's if you have one around)....and get a cheap 10 dollar, 4 channel card.....the one i got is an "Inland Thundersound Sound Card 4.1 Wave"....I have RedHat 9 and it recognized it w/ no problems...not sure if Slackware would..but if you're desperate for sound like I was...it's worth a try. Sorry I can't help you on your current setup...this is the best I can do....I'm just as confused about my other soundcard too ....tried downloading drivers from various websites to get it to work but it failed to recognize my soundcard each time. But good luck on getting your audio to work.
