ATI vs. NVIDIA

Just wanted to get everyones opinion on this. I currently have an older Nvidia card with 16mb or ram. I really want to upgrade now because I've been playing a lot of games lately and I can see that this card is not going to cut it.

Would you suggest getting and Nvidia or ATI video card? Not just in terms of general performance but also how easy it is to install the drivers on Linux. The Nvidia drivers were pretty easy to install but I've never messed with ATI's drivers.

Any thoughts?

WEll Im running two ATI's in two machines and they both run real good

one is the old but faithfull 8500 le in a dual 2000+ AMD setup with 512 MB Ram...this card just doesnt stop

the other card is a 9600 pro on a 1Gig athlon with 512 Mb Ram......yes this is on purpose to even them out a bit when playing games on my network

and the drivers for linux from ATI site work great on one condition......dont install everything when installing linux...

my flavour is mandrake

and after a few goes I found that installing everything gave me errors all the time when trying to install the drivers...

but once I just let mandrake install ala naturale and then did some updates everything is fine....

both machines are running dual wide screen monitor desktops and going sweet so far ...... and the config for the drivers is flamin brilliant once you get that far that is hehehehe

I am still trying to figure out what it is that has the prob with the drivers....I think its something to do with something in XFree libs but still to confirm this.

ok one more thing......when I installed the drivers in REDHAT the one time I tried it...they went on straight away and didnt give me any troubles what so ever.

Not sure if any of this will help as I am still very new to Linux...but the cards work really well for me....hope for you too

Cheers
Wayne

Thanks for the input. Here is another dumb question. If I just upgrade to a newer Nvidia card I really won't need to install the drivers again since the nvidia drivers are universal to all their cards right?
