ATI tv out broken?

I have now tried to get TV out working properly on two different computers, using two different ATI video cards. Both were using x.org and the 3.9.0 fglrx drivers.

When in clone mode, the video on the TV is extremely garbled and useless. In dual head mode, it works fine, but I don't need that mode.

Is there some way to get clone mode to work properly?

The two video cards are an ATI FireGL T2 128MB in my laptop, and a Radeon 8500LE 64MB in my desktop.
