Yes That looks good. It is more detailed than it was the last time I looked on the ATI web site.

Perhaps ATI have now got the message.

Thank you very much Stunter. I hope the next time I write, I will say it is working.

Thanks again.

Well... I tried.

I got Check.sh and run it.
Didn't like that. It said that I wasn't in the console or I don't own it.
I was logged in as root in the init mode!
So, I tried to install the fglrx-----, and it said the dependentcies were wrong ....... etc etc
When I finally got X.Org 6.8 installed, I tried the Check.sh one more time. Same result.
So, I thought, that must be it now. WRONG :-( The source files were not where they should be.
So I looked for the source files. HOW? I don't know what they look like, OR where they are/should be. Hmmmm!
So. You can guess my next question.

What are/is the name of these source files?
And where do I put them?

Appreciate more help please.
That last www you gave me was useful. So if you have another like that. That would be good.

Thanks.

Hi. Its me again.

I installed the source files into Mandrake 10.1 but still no joy.
I have now just received SuSE 9.2 from Linux Format magazine, and installed that.
Still the same problem. Which I expected.
Here is a copy of my Xorg.0.log. Any Ideas please?

dsnuggs,

That's pretty much exactly what I get on my Mandrake 64 10.1 machine when I try to use the ATI agpgart.

Anyone have any ideas? Should we all drive up to Markham and talk to the ATI guys in person?

Sorry to hear that S37en.62. But not unexpected.
I think you are right. Lets go to ATI. Bit of a bus ride thought from the UK. :-)

It's the framebuffer bit that has got me at the moment. Any ideas what that means?

And the following:-

"(EE) Unable to locate/open config file" at the beginning?

"(WW) Open APM failed (/dev/apm_bios) (No such device)" at quarter way down?

It is mad, isn't it.

Do you think Bill Gates has paid them to ignore Linux?

Makes you wonder.

No, I think that they're so focused on beating Nvidia for the Windows market that they really don't care about people using Linux. I assume that there is one guy who does their Linux drivers, and even then, it's not his full time position. I think it's about time that they took some of the record profits they made selling cards to people like you and me and invest a little in some linux and linux64 drivers that work without having to pound away at them for a month. And if they think these drivers are good enough to release, then they have a serious problem with their documentation. I don't care if they're hard to install, if they could just give me some solid instructions.

Right now, after about 5 days solid of trying to get these to work, I'm considering just pawning this card off on one of my Windows using friends or clients and picking up a GeForce6600GT. Same price, twice the fps.

Wow. End of rant I guess.

Yes, we'll bring our hockey sticks for some slashing and hooking. I can bring some baseball bats too, there are plenty of them available here in Montreal after the Expos left.

Ok. And give them a call from me please Se7en.62. And make it L O U D.

I think I will do the same. Buy a GeForce6600GT. And if anyone asks me about ATI, well you can guess what I shall tell them what NOT to buy.

If any thing does appear, and works out, I shall inform you.

Now, just to become the devil's attorney: Last week-end I downloaded and installed the latest ATI ( released february 16 2005, version 8.10.19 ) drivers for my Fedora Core3 installed distro, and I had no problem at all: just rpm --force + fglrxconfig and ... voila. No module to compile, no link to create, nothing. So it looks like ATI is improving ( at least for the install process )
I think I might try the same procedure for my Mandrake10.1 partition ( I triple boot: Win2k, Mandrake10.1 and FC3 ) but I'm reluctant to do it because obviously Mandrake uses "tweaked" ATI and Nvidia drivers.
So, let's keep faith in ATI.

Working!

I FINALLY GOT THEM WORKING!

Took a week, and probably estranged my girlfriend, but they're working.

No acceleration errors in Xorg.0.conf, and glxgears reports frames of about 4500 fps.

Here is the final how to for how I got it working: (This is copied from my forum post at mandrakeclub.com, and parts of it are Mandrake specific, you can probably figure out how to get around them. ALSO: This is for the 64-bit drivers.)

0) Make sure you have your kernel sources installed

1) Set up rpmdrake to get the package Xorg 6.8.2 from the cooker (this will take care of the dependancies)

2) Go to http://xorg.freedesktop.org/wiki/ and download the uncompliled version of Xorg 6.8.2

3) Follow the instructions there to compile and install it on your system (the cooker version does not work properly, you have to complile and install it manually. It's pretty easy actually.) Make sure you're in the console and X isn't running when you do this.

4) Run xorgconfig and then edit it up to get a working X server again

5) Get the latest x86_64 drivers from ATI (Version: 8.10.19) from (http://www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/fg...9-1.x86_64.rpm)

6) Exit to the console again, go to the directory the file is in, and run the rpm command that ATI recommends: "rpm -Uh --force fglrx64_6_8_0-8.10.19-1.x86_64.rpm"

7) Then do the following (as root):
$ cd /lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod/
$ rmmod fglrx
$ sh make.sh
$ cd /lib/modules/fglrx
$ sh make_install.sh
$ fglrxconfig

Cool in the fglrxconfig, set your stuff up like you did in the xorg config. I saved my origional xorg.conf, and cut and pasted my mouse settings, as Mandrake set them up right on the origional install, and none of these config programs had the wheel or the button right.
In the section for "UseInternalAGPGART" I have "no"

9) Exit out of root, startx and pray.

The two things that made the difference were compiling and installing xorg myself, and using "rmmod fglrx" before building the drivers.

For my next trick, I'll be sending my resume to ATI.

Congratulations for the successfull install.
Now, I don't feel like installing a complete version of xorg, but what I don't understand is why you have to download 2 xorg files: one from Mandrake ( step 1 ) and the one "official" from Xorg ( step 2 ) ? shouldn,t the one downloaded from Xorg be enough ?

Ok. This looks like another way of trying to install ATI. The problem is, now I have changed to SuSE 9.2, 32-bit.
I could find the equivalent files for that, and try again.
I find that SuSE has a lot more to give, and it set up my equipment better, and installs the source files also.

I do have the AMD-64 3000+ cpu, so I could download the 64-bit version of Linux I s'pose.

Any way. Well done Se7en.62. There is light at the end of the tunnel after all.
I'll give it another go.

I nearly went out and bought an nVidia. Whoops. Misses wouldn't like that.

I stiill plan on buying an NVidia in the next few weeks. I've made a deal where I can get a GF6600GT for my R9800Pro.

Biased turkey, I installed the Mandrake rpm of Xorg6.8 to satisfy the dependancies without having to hunt them down. It's just me being lazy. i'm pretty sure that you can skip that step and just install 6.8.2 right from the site.

1 GF6600Gt for 1 R9800 pro, not a bad deal
I'll switch to Nvidia, but not right now. So far I'm satisfied with my Radeon 8500 LT and 9600 XT, both provided at the time of purchased the best bang for the buck.
My next purchase ( by the end of 2005 or early 2006 ): A dual CPU motherboard , 2 dual cores Opteron and 2 SLI video cards running Linux.
Imho the best SLI video boards for that purpose will be from Nvidia.

Next week-end , If I have some time left ( Granturismo4 will be available in canada this week ) I'll give a swirl at installing Xorg6.8.2 and ATI 8.10.19 )
