ATI Radeon 8500 128 Mb

Hi,

I had a problem with getting my video card correctly set up in SuSe 8.2, and have corrupted my install in doing so. There are at least three suggestions on how to best deal with this card on the Internet, and I've tried most of them. I'm thinking of installing Red Hat 9.0 as I heard it might work better, but would like to know what to do should it not work as well.

1. SuSe 8.2 came with XFree86 4.3.0, automatically picked the Radeon driver (R200qi or R200ql), and 2D worked great, but no 3D acceleration was allowed. (would not 3D enable)

2. Went to ATI site, found drivers for XFree86 4.2.X. Installed XFree86 4.2.? rpm then followed instructions. Was told to run a couple of .sh's, first told to get kernel source, which I did. Followed directions. (a bit wary as to monitor specs, as I used ranges from monitor specs but they weren't in any defaults. My monitor was correctly matched in distro install, but still had to input values here). At some point, something complained about my kernel source not matching my kernel, since the later is athlon optimized, but I can't find an athlon-optimized kernel source anywhere online. Went ahead anyway.

Currently, I can get X-Windows to run (KDE), but only 2D and only very slowly. When X-Windows dies, the prompt screen is unreadable (as if the width was not specified properly).

I've also read about other drivers existing, and other suggestions such as DRI.

Summarizing:
1) Which is the best way to go for full 3D support?
Default Install - ATI Drivers/Source - DRI - Other?

2) Has anybody had similar experiences? Does anybody know what's going on?

Thanks in Advance

Abit KX7-333R
Windows on Striping Raid, SuSe 8.2 on seperate drive
3 x Seagate 7200 rpm 60 Gb
Athlon XP 2000+
512 MB DDR
ATI Radeon 8500 128 Mb

(in unrelated problem, top speed transfer from Windows mount to other drive is approx. 1 Mb/sec, can't figure out why)

HI,
I've had similar problems with a 9700Pro. I tried the same things except that installing the drivers completely messed up my XFree to the point where it would not start. Gave me messages about the flgrx driver being for a later version of XFree. Oops! guess I must have installed the wrong one.

Other than that, I have been able to find any doco able getting SUSE going with radeon cards and 3D enabled.

Please help people.
Derek.

Post Update

Tried installing RedHat 9.0 this morning after downloading ISO's last night.

Couldn't continue since RedHat wouldn't recognize any of my partitions or my RAID array like SuSe did, and I didn't know what hard drive was which (hdb hde hdg) for re-formating, and RedHat doesn't make this available to know.

Also, it said I had Radeon 8500LE while I have the full version Radeon 8500 128 Mb (not LE). Windows says its driver supports both, should I be concerned for Linux?

Waiting for a response.

To Recap: What would be great is a driver in complete rpm form that involves no tailoring (modifying various files in the OS) that also supports 3D acceleration. ATI's drivers are NOT like this.

Don't like the sound of all this. I've got a Radeon 8500 and was thinking of trying SuSe. I'm on Mandrake 9.1 at the momment and graphics performance is slow. I tried playing Tux racer not really a demanding game for the 8500 but it was like well poor about 2fps

Another Update -- Monitor Problem?

I've found out some more info...

I re-installed SuSe 8.2 today.

It says the drivers are loaded, but startx won't run. I forgot the messages I had before I tried to fix the problem and made it worse:

(EE) Radeon(0): No valid mode found for this DFP/LCD
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a useable configuration.

In searching other boards, it turns out this error is Monitor related, not driver related.

Possible explanations are that ddc fails, or that the monitor is probed and incorrect ranges are found, and used over those in config...

Also, apparently vesa drivers will work, but I highly doubt it will be efficient, and 3D should be out of the question.

I will try putting

option "Monitor Layout" "CRT"

in my XF86Config and/or XF86Config-4 file(s), and see if that works.

I'm less enthousiastic to try

option "IgnoreEDID" "on"

as this is more risky for the monitor.

I don't know how to post my actual .0.log file as from Linux I can't access X-Windows and don't know if the text browser (w3b?) will support this site, and and unfamiliar with how the text copying/pasting system works from prompt-mode, but I'll look at it again and try and determine for myself the problem areas.

Options didn't work

The options I tried didn't work, and didn't change the error output as far as I can tell.

Main problem seems to be with ddc (don't know what that is)

and that the Monitor HSync and VSync settings are set to default (bad settings)

Anybody have any other ideas?

Fixed Problem

Aparently the problem was caused by having my TV hooked up to the TV out on my card. Looks like this itself might be fixed in a later version of XFree86 whn option "CrtScreen" is re-implemented. Apparently the radeon driver will not choose a monitor type properly.

OMFG this link to this post will be forever engraved in my head and at least 300 text files on my computer..

After this post and me thinking and reading through the ATI and Monitor manual at least 3 times about DDC (that is the standard system used - ie plug and play).. The Host (Windows, linux, whatever OS) can send a request on one of the 2 channels (forgot the abbreviations of it) and the monitor will send a response, there is another channel where the monitor continuesly sends the info).. well it appears having TV out hooked up to a TV (probably anything) will interfere with the DDC channel and what I'm guessing - totally bypass unless there is more specific information passed along to the OS (Im guessing this is why Windows will work but Linux will not).

I'm just surprised I havent seen many posts, this info should be put everywhere, ESPECIALLY on the ATI website which I do not see a single bit about it. :-/
