ATI & Kernel 2.6

I've been having problems getting the ATI drivers to work with kernel 2.6. Basically, all I need the drivers for is to get my display on my laptop to run at 1400x1050 in X. Does anyone know of an alternative way to doing this?

I'm using a Radeon Mobility 9000.

I'm assuming you're referring to the ATI drivers you downloaded off their website. Can you be a little more specific about what the problem is. What kind of errors are you getting? Is the fglrx module loading? Have you looked at the XFree86 log file to see what's going wrong?

Well, the main problem with the ATI drivers is that when I try and exit my X server the screen turns off like it did wothout the drivers, but it stays off, unlike with no drivers it was only off for a split second.

Yes, the fglrx modules loads without a hitch and there are no error messages in my XFree86 log.

The display simply will not turn back on.

My main question really was, is there an alternative way of enabling XFree to run at a resolution of 1400x1050? I dont need 3d accel or anything, just need X to run at a higher res then what it is. I'm really waiting for ATI to release a driver that fully support kernel 2.6.

[EDIT] Hmm, I've read around a bit and from what I see XFree86 4.4 has built in support for the radeon. I'm going to go ahead and install it and see if it works for me.[/EDIT]
