ATI 9600: fglrx module is loaded but doesn't exist

I've tried installing the drivers for the ATI Radeon 9600, but have failed miserably.

after following that many -sometimes contradicting- tutorials, I am stuck with that problem:

Code:
dave@dave:~$ lsmod | grep fglrx
fglrx 232796 0
dave@dave:~$ lsmod | grep agpgart
agpgart 34476 1 intel_agp
that seems fine.

but trying to run XFree86, I get the sweet "no screen found" error. looking a few lines above in /var/log/XFree86.0.log, I see this:

Code:
(II) LoadModule: "fglrx"
(WW) Warning, couldn't open module fglrx
(II) UnloadModule: "fglrx"
(EE) Failed to load module "fglrx" (module does not exist, 0)
now what the ** is that supposed to mean?
