ATAPI CDRW install problems

I need help with installation and configuration of a 52x ATAPI CDRW in Mandrake 9.1. I'm new to Linux, having started with MDK 9.1. I run Mandrake off a 2nd hard drive and Win98 off my primary drive. The new CDRW works in Win98. The old CDRW worked in both Win98 and MDK. My DVDR is not being recognized in Linux either.

My problem:
- My 8x CDRW died 2 weeks ago. I replaced it with a 52x ATAPI CDRW, as the master drive on my secondary IDE bus. I have a DVDR as the slave on the same bus.
- I have followed instructions on installing ATAPI CDRWs from troubleshooters.com, but the CDRW is still not recognized in the GUI.

- I want the CDRW to work so that I can install MDK 9.2. If I can get the DVDR to work as well, that would be an extra.
- The MDK 9.2 installation disc recognizes the CDRW as /hdc and the DVDR as /hdd. I get an error message that /hdc is not ready for command
- Mandrake/Diskdrake wants to recognize the CDRW as /scd0 and the DVDR as /scd1. From the shell, eject /dev/scd0 ejects the CDRW & eject /dev/scd1 ejects the DVDR

Questions:
- What else can I do to get the CDRW to work?
- Is there any way that I can install MDK 9.2 over the existing setup and have my CDRW automagically start working?

I have had a long and aggravating two weeks with this problem. I almost went to the Dark Side (Windows XP), but I'm still perservering. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Larry

When you are using a burning program (K3b for example) just choose the appropriate /scd* when it asks you (or go into the preferences and choose it) for one.

Stick with the /scd0 and /scd1 settings. That's what i use and it works fine. :-)
