Any way to prevent external HDD from sleeping?

I have a couple of Samsung G3 station external drives, and all of them have the "feature" of spinning down and going into sleep mode after about 3 minutes of non-use. This can get kind of annoying because then you have to wait for them to spin up and as it happens they will often be out of use for a couple of minutes at a time, meaning they power down literally seconds before they're going to get powered up again.
Is there a way I can either prevent the sleep mode altogether, or adjust the delay to 15-20 minutes?

With a local drive you can use something like
hdparm -B 255 /dev/sda
(I don't have external drives to test.)
