alsa isn't finding the sound card after installation of new software

Hi,

I'm having troubles with the sound in alsa on my msi laptop in debian lenny.
Alsa seems to have forgotten what sound card there is: when I click the icon I use to control the sound by (volume applet) I get the following message: No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found.
When I run aplay -l
Code:
steven@msi-steven:~$ aplay -l
aplay: device_list:207: no soundcards found...
when I run lspci -k I can find the sound device:
Code:
00:08.0 Audio device: nVidia Corporation Device 0ac0 (rev b1)
	Kernel modules: snd-hda-intel
I really wouldn't know how to fix this so I googled and I found some solutions for the problem but none of the worked so far.
I tried the following for example:
Code:
steven@msi-steven:~$ sudo modprobe snd-hda-intel
FATAL: Error inserting snd_hda_intel (/lib/modules/2.6.26-2-amd64/kernel/sound/pci/hda/snd-hda-intel.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
FATAL: Error running install command for snd_hda_intel
Anyone have an idea how to fix this?

there are probably 2 possible causes for this failure. I installed kdenlive of which the dependencies were conflicting with vlc, this was no problem because I just deinstalled vlc, now I reinstalled it and I can only play divx movies with vlc (instead of totem) and the sound stopped working. The other cause might be an update of at least the kernel headers... I still do not completely understand their purpose but I know the kernel is important...

oh and also:
Code:
steven@msi-steven:~$ cat /proc/asound/cards
--- no soundcards ---
this might sum up the problem

steven@msi-steven:~/Downloads/alsa-driver-1.0.23$ ./configure&&make&&make install
also ran with no errors so reinstalling alsa didn't solve the problem either.
