alsa configuration

i just compiled the 2.6.0 kernel and i used to use the oss driver for my c-media sound card. now that oss is defunct i figured i would use alsa on this kernel. but when i try to pass "alsamixer" i get this error:

alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device

i don't know anything about the alsa system so any support i really appreciate. thanks a lot.
