3c589d can ping localhost but nothing else

I installed Mandrake Linux 8.1 on a laptop and I am trying to configure the 3com 3c589d combo card. I am able to ping localhost but when I try to ping anything else I get a network unreachable error. This includes when I ping the IP of the NIC.

Any help is appreciated.

Chris

is your network interface (eth0) is up?

what do you see if you do " ifconfig " ?

The interface eth0 is up I believe but I am getting a

module /lib/modules/2.4.8-26/pcmcia/3c589d.o not available

error at boot up.
I tried getting the 3c589d.o file but it would give me errors at boot up. Is there a file that I can compile so it will be kernel specific?

An ifconfig shows:
lo Link encap: Local Loopback
inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:164346 Metric:1
RX packets:23 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:23 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0

RX bytes:1403 (1.3 Kb) TX bytes:1403 (1.3 Kb)

well
you interface isn't up, so it isn't running, that's why you can't reach anything.

try "modprobe 3c589d"
if you get an error, I suppose you need to recompile your kernel, some modules must be missing in it.

I'm having the same problem, how would I go about checking that my eth0 is open and availible. I don't have a 3c589d module but I do have a 3c589_cs.o.gz module does that work as a subsitute?

It may be the same, I suppose lsmod just hide extension on my system.
Take a look on google or in kernel help documentation if you want to be sure.
If you can't ping anything but that your interface is up, make sure your routes are correct (route -n) and doesn't route packet to your room's wall instead of the internet
