2tb ext. Hd not recognised

Hello to all of you. I am so very happy to say that I have finally disposed of my Windows/burden/expensive/crashed.buy.(This is truly a personal opinion, and I feel Microsoft is only unsuitable for myself, and wish no one to take this opinion to heart. I know nothing.)
I have installed Mint 12 fresh. I cannot get my new 2TB. usb 3,2 to be seen on any of my OS. I did the usual, reboot, plug in when on, reboot when plugged in, tried many os including Ubuntu 11, Fedora 16. These are all on their own hard drives, and I turn off the other hard drives when starting up a different OS, just to be sure. Can you help? Thanks in advance.
Hairman

To clarify, I have several unix OS, and I tried the external hard drive on each, carefully. No Joy. I am new to unix, however used MS for sometime but certainly not a pro.

Try running fdisk -l and dmesg and seeing if that sees the device.

I got a new USB external drive a while ago and my Debian system didn't mount it. Turns out the device was formatted NTFS from the factory and I didn't have NTFS drivers, Debian being Debian and aggressively free.

Since I didn't expect ever to plug it into a Windows box, I just reformatted it ext3.

I would like to format the whole 2TB but I cannot get the system to recognise my new device. I also have problems with the system hanging on sometimes if the device is plugged in. For instance if I try to reboot, the system will just hang on boot screen, for hours if I leave it. If I unplug the ext. hd then it immediately continues on and boots up. I can see the device in disk utility, but not gparted. I cannot do anything with it in disk utility. It says it cannot format. Is there an os that might be easier to have it recognised? I now have moonOS, mint12, monomaxos6, crunch. I went to Hitachi and downloaded a file that they claimed would work. It is called Hitachi GPT disk manager. I tried to open with Wine but I got errors that said my Wine may be incomplete. It is just newly downloaded twice. It works for others. It says I have a problem with msiexe.exe. I went through all of the options I was told by wine, did some testing and it would not complete for the same reason. I would like to know if this Hitachi program works. It may be easy for someone if it does. So far not me. Thanks.

Make sure the USB cable either is short and specially designed to work with the drive or is a double-headed / Y cable, one for data, one for power.

A 2TB drive should work on Linux without any disk manager.

Can you post the output of the commands frankbell suggests.

Sorry I overlooked the suggested by frankbell. This may seem silly but when I use the terminal, which one do I use? I see several terminals such as "x" and I have seen others. Are these all the same? Is there a terminal for beginners which will give you instructions as you go?

Now as far as the cables, this is new so I am using the originals. It is short. It is however usb3 but reverse compatible. Does this matter?
Do you know if the fact that the new 2tB drive hangs up my system is just part of not being recognised? Will it clear up later when recognised?

I will run the commands as I believe they should be input, and will post the results right away.

You can use any terminal emulator, even the console, the result should be the same.

The original cable should work.

The drive probably hangs the system because the system keeps trying to probe it, but maybe doesn't recognize it. Or it could be a driver issue, but the fact that it keeps booting if you unplug it mostly rules this out.

Okay this is what I got with dmesg. I don't know what part you need so I just grabbled the stuff before the Hitachi 2TB drive and pasted all this. I don't really know what it is. When I put in the fdisk -l command, I got nothing. The line just stayed the same as if I just pushed enter with no command. i hope this helps.

Oh the wires are the ones that came with the unit. Very short. This is a USB 3 and reverse compatible with USB 2. tHANKS FOR YOUR TIME.

That output for fdisk -l looked rather unusual.

Here's fdisk -l from one of my computers, a Win7 box running Wubi. sdb1 is my external drive. Something like this would be more like what I would expect to see:

Code:
Disk /dev/sda: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60801 cylinders, total 976773168 sectors
Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x7425bf1d

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 * 2048 2459647 1228800 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT
/dev/sda2 2459648 956291063 476915708 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT
/dev/sda3 956291072 976771071 10240000 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT
Note: sector size is 4096 (not 512)

Disk /dev/sdb: 999.5 GB, 999470882816 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 15189 cylinders, total 244011446 sectors
Units = sectors of 1 * 4096 = 4096 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 4096 bytes / 4096 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 4096 bytes / 4096 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x471e169c

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdb1 256 244011007 976043008 7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT
