Worse yet when I tried to recompile the kernel to fix this problem it screwed up my friend's Windows install PLUS it would not boot back into Linux because of a kernel panic of some sort.
Fortunately I had a backup of his windows OS and restored Windows but the Linux install had to go byebye.
In short: not only can you NOT get the rtl819* chipset working with Linux but in trying to do so you run the additional risk of a mysterious kernel panic, damaging another OS's ability to boot, and generally screwing up the crap out of your machine.
Sigh. I've never met a Linux problem I could not solve with enough research...
