*** usb hard drive ***

is it true that not all USB hard drive are compatible with Linux? Or just any hard drive complying with USB standard will automatically works with Linux? If not all hard drive works, could you suggest a brand that definitely work under linux?

I have gone to computer center and found that lots of USB hard drive cases are available. You can plug in various hard drives into the case. Does this sort of device work under linux as well? Anyone did a test on this?

Thank you.

I've never actually seen a straight USB hard-drive that isn't a normal IDE driver connected to a bus converter. Almost all of them work under Linux, at least all of the ones I've ever seen... they use the usb-storage module, its pretty vanilla.

Cheers,

i bought one off of half.com a few months ago. 100gb it's a no-name brand (if it's a brand at all?) its an IDE to USB 2.0. works without a hitch. all i had to do was mount /dev/sda1. it was that simple.
