I have temporarily abandoned my plans to use Kiosktool to restrict user access to just about everything because I can't get Kiosktool to work. I saw references to starting a browser in the root window of x by editing .xsession and not having a window manager at all. This works really well --- I love the way that it strips away *all* control from a casual user. My problem is that my casual users (average 15 per box on a 12 box network) need more than a browser. They need an irc client and a word processor. I added
exec mozilla-firefox &
exec xterm
end
to my .xsession file and saw xterm open before firefox but, unfortunately, it was behind firefox so unusable. Is there any way of having more than one application open in this way and then having some kind of pager that will allow users to select [internet][word processor][irc] --- and only that? I don't want any option to log out etc. Typing this I am starting to feel a little stupid
because the obvious answer is that I need a window manager Is there any other way or am I better off stripping down icewm or something.....?
