xCopying from NTFS XP to Linux Based storage - problem = dates discrimination
Hi,
I know this is a bad place to ask about a third party purchased product. But i know its OS is *nix based, whilst i dont know what the FS is.
I am trying to use one of these Tera-byte NAS (Maxtor) as a simple dump-bucket of a backup which i want to re-sync everyday with date changes. It works, but it wont discriminate with dates. Therefore im doing full backups every night - which are still running during the next morning.
Is this a problem with ALL NTFS to *nix FileSystems? I have googled alot and i read about time values - either 2 seconds or 0.1. I dont get it.
Could anyone let me know if this is a known problem?
My reading lead me to the fact that NTFS uses 100 nansecond time resolution for time stamping, and FAT uses 2 second resolution. Therefore if your file was modified in NTFS at 07:00:00.23 and copied to a FAT FS the timestamp on the destinatino would read 07:00:02.00.
Which successfully renders date discrimination useless when trying to re-sync from ntfs to fat FS's. Work around is to either allow for a tolerance in the copying program for seconds IE if destination timestamp > 2sec diff then copy. (which i cant figure out how to do) or throw out your timestamps and force a re-set to an arbitrary time with .00 seconds, and this will now work as perfect, whilst at the same time NEGATING THE WHOLE REASON WHY YOU WANTED DATE DISCRIMINATION.

Adding --modify-window=1 as option to rsync worked for me to circumvent the difference in timestamp.
