X only working with 640*480 and 8bps

I can't remember if I already posted a thread about this, sorry if I did...

I could only get X to work with 640*480 resolution with 8bps, anything else I'd get an error, so I decided to download and install the ATI drivers for my radeon 9600 pro, then I ran glfglrxconfig to configure, after this I tried 24-bit with a higher resoltuion, upon doing this my screen went black and the system freezes, I then tried lowering my bps to 8 and then I get an error, changed to 16 and I get the error, back to 24 and the system freezes.

I've got an A7V8X motherboard if that helps...

I just want X to work, can somebody please help?

I don't know what Gentoo uses for X configuration and I can't say I know what the problem is. I suggest trying
XFree86 -configure
and
xf86config
