Wondering about cheap sound cards...

I have been wanting to start recording some more music with several flutes I have, but unfortunately my mic connector either has a problem or there is some other problem that inputs noise at about the same level as the flute.

Since I found some cheap pci sound cards on Ebay, would that be better than what I have now for recording, or should I get a more trusted brand?

Also, is there a way to test and make 100% sure it's not something simpler? I've fiddled with alsamixer, whatever mixer Zenwalk uses on xfce, but to no prevail.

lspci output.
Code:
Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 01)

check alsaconf alsa

Unfortunately reloading the module and rerunning alsaconf didn't help, and the mic is fairly new. I purchased it only a few months ago when I first tried to get my old mic to work.

Must be doing something wrong...

I've been following this https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...e-jack-292731/ and reading through this http://jackaudio.org/documentation .

I entered sudo jackd -R -dalsa -dhw:0 -r48000 -p1024 -n2, which removed both the mic and the sound device from Audacitys preferences.

Out of curiosity can Alsa be turned off then Jack would run in place of alsa?
