Window Sizing and Placement

Hello,

I am running TWM. In my .twmrc file I have the setting RandomPlacement so that I don't have to manually place every window when they are created. This works well, but I can't seem to control certain windows. The RandomPlacement setting is supposed to yield when a command is given with a -geometry switch. Most of my windows aren't full screen, but a couple are, due to my personal preferences (i.e., Firefox, OpenOffice).

Using the geometry switch works well with many of the apps I use it with - xterm, xclock. I have tried to open the command Firefox with a geometry switch, but it doesn't seem to respond. If I issue while the RandomPlacement variable is active, then it places it automatically (not where I want) and if I issue it while the variable is commented out it awaits me to place the window. The same thing with OpenOffice - it actually was looking for a file with the name of the information I gave for the geometry.

The command I issue for firefox is:

% firefox -geometry +0+0

Any ideas?

well, as AFAIK, having done a bit of X programming
the app itself is responsible for accepting the
standard X switches on the command line. So i assume they could ignore them.

Have you tried setting geometry in the .Xdefaults file?

I have never dealt with the .Xdefaults file. Do you have any resources that would instruct me on how to edit it?

google Xdefaults, loads of it.

I tried setting the geom in Xdefaults, for netscape
it works for the old version but not the new, so i assume
firefox would probably be the same.

example for Xdefaults. geometry for xman:
run xman and click on it. You will find this
if you click on the first window

WM_CLASS(STRING) = "topBox", "Xman"
and this:
WM_CLASS(STRING) = "manualBrowser", "Xman"
if you click on the other window you get when you click "manual page"

so I can edit ~/.Xdefaults and set them to silly values,
Code:
Xman.manualBrowser*geometry: 800x350+0-0
Xman.topBox*geometry: 100x350+10+10
then to re-read the file:
xrbd ~/.Xdefaults

and xman will have silly values for each window.
using the simpler:
Xman*geometry: 400x350+0-0

will set the geometry for all the windows.

look at man xterm which has loads of resources you can set.
