why mysql?

I am lerning MySQL from some days,
configuring MySQL took time (individual as well as with PHP) and yet trying to call from C.

But i can't even write complex(nested ) querries in MySQL. i have to use temporary tables,
then why it is most popular one?

one more
Do i have any other databases in LINUX ?(which are powerfull)
