why does it take a long time for FTP

Hi everyone,
I'm new to this forum. Its great to see people giving solutions to various problems by sparing their valuable time.Thanks everyone for the good work.
I have a problem in FTP. I'm using RHEL5.0.
When i do ftp from one linux machine to another linux machine it takes a long time to requset for the password.
Earlier it was very fast, but now it takes a long time.
Can anyone suggest me what could be wrong and what should be done to enable a fast FTP.

Check if any DNS problem exist .

What is 'selinux' status on your system. is it enabled ?
root#sestatus
Whats you iptables rules ?
root#iptables -L

The reason may also lies in account verification. Check your /etc/nsswitch.conf to find how your account (username) get verified.
Have you checked /var/log/messages for any error or warning .
