Why are 0 's escaped in hexdump?

I was looking at this file that was padded with 0's in hexdump. I noticed the 0's were escaped \0 so they would be literal 0's. Why is this?

Can you show an example piece of a dump?
I suspect that what you're looking at is \0 = ASCII NULL char http://www.asciitable.com/
