I understand that there are two versions, stable (current one is 2.6.15.4) and the developed. I try to find the latest developed version (even numbered?) and also where I can download from. Thanks.
To the end-user, "Linux" means an operating system that they install on their computer. The purists---esp from the FSF---argue that it really should be called GNU Linux, because it is the marriage of the Linux kernel with the Open-Source utilities developed under the GPL and its derivatives.
All the textbooks, CDs, and boxed distrs say simply Linux.
And that's the truth.........(What smiley would we use to capture Edith-Ann saying this on Laugh-In and sticking her tongue out while making a rude noise??)
The kernel hasn't been branched to a 2.7 tree yet and won't be for a while. I was reading a discussion on this the other day and the verdict was while there are plenty of bug fixes and features to improve but nothing needs a major rewrite which would constitute a minor version renumber.
