I'm trying to remove a group logged in as root with the groupdel command, and get the following message:

groupdel: cannot remove user's primary group

What is a primary group, and how does one go about changing a user's primary group? Thanks in advance for any info!

What group are you trying to remove? I never heard of this error but it might be indicating that your trying to remove a grouop with a particular user only assigned to that group.

The name of the group is remote_forward, and at present there are no users listed for this group in /etc/group, but it appears in the output of the groups command issued as root.
