Question What happpened?

Ok, I wrote a program in PHP, it worked and everything, but it would create files with permissions that my user couldn't access becasue the server and PHP run as user apache. So I took my regular user and added it to the apache group, and vise versa for apache. What I needed was to be able to write/remove modify the files that are created, without sacrificing security by allowing the files to be world writeable. Well after using userconf to add the two users to eachothesr group, I still had a problem, ~so I figured I would sleep on it, and I thought that maybe an update process would happen overnight to fix this problem. My question is what could I have done to cause the changes to each user to be instantanious, do I need to restart a srevice, or run a program besides userconf. It was like the system was saying that each user was a member of the others group, but it wasn't working like that. It all works now, but I would like to know what hapened between then and now to implement the changes.

TIA

Mike.
