anyway, thanks for the input and how is linux for writing code, im going to college to be a computer scientist, would i be able to use linux in class or would i have to use micro$oft software to do what i was instructed to do. -not worded well
My first encounter with my own computer started from linux (it was very unpleasant I believe early 1998), then I went to college (fall 1999) (computer science major), and in my first programming class (C++) in the lab we were seated on the UNIX terminals (I didn't know it was UNIX at that time, but the interface looked a lot like my Caldera desktop I had without X running ). So, I poked around the campus and I was admitted into UNIX development lab, there I saw IT. So for every CS class I had we used UNIX workstations {then} to compile our little programs and projects (C, C++, Java, Perl, Python). After a while it felt like in home.
I asked people from other universities and colleges around NYC, and most of them tld me they use "that awkward thing called UNIX", the only guys that I know who do all the programming in Windows are from Pace University in NYC - this is possible to compile and run C, C++, Java, Perl in Windows using Borland suits, etc. On the other hand, the native environment for C and its derivatives is UNIX (it was created on a UNIX platform).

I have to say this was the most interesting string of messages i have read for weeks!!!!

It is certianly interesting to know what everyone else is using linux for.

My linux experienced started with a bang (debian) in a share house at uni, where we have a LAN of absolutely ancient machines (cause we were real poor!!) we used linux as a gateway with ipmasq, that old version b4 ipchains!!

I then used windows for many years at uni then finally took the plunge again recently (when i had a nice machine). I really like to GUI's and niceness of redhat KDE, i like to impress ppl wwith a flash setup (at the cost of a fast machine lol)

I now use a linux machine nearly everyting except counterstrike and X-Plane (note...this is a much better flight sim the MS-flight sim!!!!) and a few macromedia progs!...

I also use it as a mp3 database like someonbe else said where i have all my mp3s on one machine and anyone on the LAN can play them thru samba..

to be honest i cant even begin to list the things i do with linux...or for that matter the things it has done for ME.....the list is far too long.....

Why does anyone use Linux?
There isn't any ONE specific reason I don't think. Other than:
Free? Stable? More configurable than a Mr. Potato Head?

Your imagination is the limit. I use it for development.
I use it for routing on my network.
I use it for everything except games. And actually, now that I'm starting to find my fav. game sources my wintendo is quikly becoming, a dust collector.

If you don't know why you have Linux, then you probably don't need it. The main thing I love about Linux is the open doors allowed for the end user. You can choose the paint color of your car... you cant choose the carpet color in your home... you can choose your hair style... you can choose your music... you can choose what you want to eat... you can choose which "chic" you want... well most of you*as most of u state it...incidenally the chics are in the hen house*
But if you can't choose any of that, Linux can choose it for you.

lol

tanx. It just kinda came to me.

But in all seriousness, and I should probably port this to the appropriate thread page, I think there should be a bit more "networking" among us *nix brains.

It's nice to know that in this vast world of "sheep" that there are still people out there willing to further their knowledge.
Wether it be for personal gain, or as vast as bettering the human race.

I say, instead of always making new chemicals, and bombs, we need to figure out how to get off this rock because eventually, *yes long after we are gone*, it's gonna burn up.
Mankinda *and yes WomanKind * is in a doom trail right now.

Threads are nice, but there is still too much individuality among us all. Which, actually, is what makes us unique. Kinda like *nix eh?

If that all made any sense.
