Unhappy Fuzzy Picture (mythtv)

I have installed mythtv on Redhat 9.0, I love the software but the picture quality is terrible. The picture on the TV is worse than standard cable connected directly to the TV. I suspect there is a problem with the configuration of the capture card because the mythtv generated screens are very clear and sharp. This rules out the scan converter as the problem.

Other possibly pertinent info:
- I'm using the s-video input on the TV tuner, connected to the output of a digital cable box, (coax input had similar results)
- My X resolution is set to 640x480

I am using a bt878 card - Kworld TV878RF-Pro TV Tuner
My bttv options from /etc/modules.conf are:
alias char-major-81 bttv
options bttv card=78 radio=1 gbuffers=8 pll=1

It appears to detect the tuner type okay, from /var/log/messages:
mythtv kernel: bttv0: Bt878 (rev 17) at 01:05.0, irq: 11, latency: 32, mmio: 0xde000000
mythtv kernel: bttv0: using: BT878(Jetway TV/Capture JW-TV) [card=78,insmod option]
mythtv kernel: i2c-core.o: adapter bt848 #0 registered as adapter 0.
mythtv kernel: bttv0: using tuner=5
mythtv kernel: bttv0: i2c: checking for TDA9875 @ 0xb0... not found
mythtv kernel: bttv0: i2c: checking for TDA7432 @ 0x8a... not found
mythtv kernel: i2c-core.o: driver i2c TV tuner driver registered.
mythtv kernel: tuner: probing bt848 #0 i2c adapter [id=0x10005]
mythtv kernel: tuner: chip found @ 0xc0
mythtv kernel: bttv0: i2c attach [client=Philips PAL_BG (FI1216 and compa,ok]
mythtv kernel: i2c-core.o: client [Philips PAL_BG (FI1216 and compa] registered to adapter [bt848 #0](pos. 0).
mythtv kernel: bttv0: registered device video0
mythtv kernel: bttv0: registered device vbi0
mythtv kernel: bttv0: registered device radio0

Are there any program that you use to fine tune the results?
Any help figuring out how to detect and fix the problem would be appreciated.

you can fine tune mythtv, if you run [ mythfilldatabase --manual ] you can add the fine tune adjustments to each channel as you would in XawTv.
