Warning tones - but what are they warning about?

I'm running Kubuntu 14.04. A number of times I've been hearing a warning sound consisting of four rising notes in (I think) a minor key. I've done dmesg| tail and it provides no clue at all -- its contents are the same before and after the warning sound. In fact, I heard that sound while composing this very message. So how can I determine what that sound is trying to tell me?

First, make sure that the sound is actually coming from your computer and it's not, say, your phone's low battery chime.

(I've made that mistake before).

If it's a laptop, look for a service manual online. The list of tones will be there.

It might just be a notification of an available update or an incoming email. There are lots of sounds stored in /usr/share/sounds. The configuration tool is buried somewhere in the System Settings menu, I believe.

KDE-Sys-Question

I think I've identified the sound as KDE-Sys-Question.ogg. Now the question is: which apps might issue that sound, and for what reason?

Not all warnings are software. Yesterday I had multiple cores tripping the BIOS temperature alarm. Not tuneful at all.

It's got to be something from KDE

Now that I've identified the sound as KDE-Sys-Question.ogg, it's almost certainly something that KDE generates. I just have to find out what that is. There's probably some directory that I can do a find on, but I don't know which one.

Surely, the KDE desktop has a Control Panel-type widget?
Search for sound or audio in the menu?

A likely cause: new mail from kmail

I've discovered that kmail plays this sound when a new message arrives. Since I'm using kmail and get a lot of mail, that's the most likely cause. I've disabled the sound there, and I'll see if I hear it again.

Thanks for all the help.
