I think the problem is the user in this case :)
You need to root for access to a block device.

Also, you probably want a second hard drive
to put your winDOHs on, or are you running
Linux of /devhdb... ?

Cheers,
Tink

i have one hdd: hda1, hda2, hda3 and hda5 are for linux, hda4 is extended and hda6 is for dos. i messed up everything yesterday. i figured out, that i must be root in order to write hda. so i started to installing this freaking windows as root. vmware removed all my partitions... so i have to start building my linux again
i will give it a new try, if someone with experience will give me some tips how to do this. if not, iäll stick with virtual drive for windows.

running from a real partition is just as straight forward. are you just confusing hda and hda1?

not quite sure what you're after really... if you're dual booting to windows then windows will naturally be installed in it's own partition, e.g. hda1 which you can also use via vmware. if you want to just run it under vmware and install it from there, then you would normally be able to install it into a standard file on an existing partition. either way, the configuration in VMware is fairly straight forward in my experience

it's just winter(below zero C)... nothing else. quite boring in my opinion. you should try something warmer or wait until it is summer. then here will be plenty to do.
