PPet may help. https://github.com/zenghongtu/PPet
It supports both Chinese and English. You can click “语言” (which means language) in the menu to switch language.
If there's some display problem, you can try adding --no-sandbox as the app's startup option.

Took me 1 minute to find the first URL in the code.
Surprisingly, oneko still works (on my simple Xorg/openbox desktop). But it annoys me.

I think it proves people still like the idea of a "pet" roaming on their desktop that they can either just watch or interact with. I don't know how difficult something like that would be to program, as it's not really a normal thing, but with processors as they are it should be no issue to run on modern computers with virtually no impact.
(Note: I can't get it to do anything on my desktop. It could be KDE or Plasma is killing bugs dead.)
KDE (along with most modern DEs) hides the X root window behind a false background, something to do with the way it draws wallpaper and icons I think. The roaches are probably running about happily on the root window, where it's nice and dark and you can't see them. There used to be a setting to "allow programs in desktop window" that solved the problem, but I'd be surprised if it's still there.
I've just tried xroach with fluxbox, it works ok as long as the speed is low, but they flicker a lot.
Also: I can't seem to be able to find AMOR anymore in the Ubuntu repositories. Any ideas wether it is contained in another package, or did it just went away?
Xteddy isn't anything either (it just sits there). All the animated little X11 toys of old have disappeared. I was looking for Nico, the little cat that used to chase the mouse pointer around the screen, then go to sleep on your windows. I can't find it anywhere. So sad.
The “Nico” cat that one commenter mentioned is actually “Oneko”. You can install it on Debian and Debian-based systems with sudo apt install oneko, and run using the command oneko. It chases your cursor, and sleeps. There’s also options like oneko -tora, -dog, and others.
