using tar


hello; how could i extract a file or folder in a tar .gz
I don't want to extract every thing, because i am running out of harddisk on my old computer

the size of the tar file is 4.4 Gb

Have you taken a look at the man page? It actually explains all the options for tar.

man tar

tar -[options] <filename> [ filename1, filename2, directory1 ]

Not sure what's in the tar.gz..

tar -t <filename.tar.gz>

The -t lists the files, etc.

I understand what u r saying but the out of the command doesn't show anything.

the tar file is docmovproshar.tar.gz

and the folder is call documents/Linux/100_linux_tips_and_tricks.pdf




EDIT : thx i got it working

i thought it will show me the the results right away but it didn't
the tar has completed it task then it shows
