Using Intel C++ Compiler instead of GCC for kernel/software?

Well.. i think the thread title stands for itself

how about installing and using the intel compiler as standard compiler since i have it here and its ready to install

it is known for sure that the intel compiler makes the fastest code. so how about tweaking the kernel? is it possible to compile the kernel with the intel compiler?

hope you can help me and say if its possible to do that.

one last question:
how can i compile i686 only code? when i compile apache2 and stuff, it makes i486 code everytime..

The answer was no, might be yes now.

The heart of the issue is that the kernel used some gcc extensions that weren't necessarily supported by icc. However, in more recently times they have slipped in a compiler-intel.h include file which I believe is suppose to allow you to compile with icc (much like the compiler-gcc3.h is for gcc3, compiler-gcc4.h is for gcc4, etc.).

As far as the target architecture... in the GCC world you would do something like -march=pentium4 to do what your asking.. I'd consult your icc documentation to see what the equivalent build option is.
