Just to throw this one out there. How do I change the name of a server associated with an IP address on my XP machine?

On my linux machine my 'name' is agreene_linux. Doing an NS lookup on my XP machine with my linux IP address, it resolves to ctanous_home...uh, I'd say that's the problem right? ...meaning why it can't find a network path. How on earth do I update the machine name associated with a certain IP address?

...and I already have my XP Lmhosts file with the following in it:

192.168.0.62 agreene_linux

(doesn't seem to acknowledge it though...as I've restarted several times).

Thanks!

Type ntbstat -R at the command line. This will release and renew the NetBios name cache.

Hmmm...I ended adding a static IP address for my linux box, however when I type in the machine's name on my XP box it still doesn't resolve to the IP address.

1. I can ping my linux IP address
2. It fails when pinging the linux machine name
3. I can setup smbclient to view my shared folders on my XP machine
4. my XP machine can still not view my linux machine shares (although it sees my machine on the network)...keeps timing out saying no network path/or permissions allowed.

One other thing I found out ... we don't use a broadcast address, I asked the sysadmin and he says we don't use one...uh, would that cause a problem? I really don't know much about network protocol.

I have added root and my username that I use on XP to my smbpasswd file. I also have gone over my smb.conf file many times with no luck. (I'm using swat, so there is alot of extra stuff in there).

Is there any way to 'help' XP resolve my linux server name (agreenelinux)? Would this be causing the problem...although when I try to map a network drive to \\linuxip\share it still fails...I'm ready to cry

Okay, let's see.

Double check:

Do you have your hostname set up correctly?
[i]/etc/hostname[i]

You have a broadcast address. Even if you're not configuring it, you have it. It's most likely 192.168.0.255, if you are in a standard class C (subnet mask is 255.255.255.0).

Sheesh. At this point, I'm ready to try and help you in real time.
PM me if you want to go that route (We can set up IMs or something and try out stuff on the fly, or whatever.)

Wolven guess what! I figured it out ... sorry I shoud've posted to let you know.
I had to add my linux machine to my hosts file on my XP machine AND ...this is the big one, I had to disable my IPtables on my linux machine...voila it's working!

Thank you so much for the help! I'm sure you'll see me posting sometime in the near future!
