Hmmm...I ended adding a static IP address for my linux box, however when I type in the machine's name on my XP box it still doesn't resolve to the IP address.
1. I can ping my linux IP address
2. It fails when pinging the linux machine name
3. I can setup smbclient to view my shared folders on my XP machine
4. my XP machine can still not view my linux machine shares (although it sees my machine on the network)...keeps timing out saying no network path/or permissions allowed.
One other thing I found out ... we don't use a broadcast address, I asked the sysadmin and he says we don't use one...uh, would that cause a problem? I really don't know much about network protocol.
I have added root and my username that I use on XP to my smbpasswd file. I also have gone over my smb.conf file many times with no luck. (I'm using swat, so there is alot of extra stuff in there).
Is there any way to 'help' XP resolve my linux server name (agreenelinux)? Would this be causing the problem...although when I try to map a network drive to \\linuxip\share it still fails...I'm ready to cry
