This may seem wierd but I hard rebooted the external hard drive, I didn't do this before. At the sametime I hard rebooted my Desktop also. During boot, Linux did a full scan on sda1. Then I followed all steps in my first post here. Issue seems resolved now. We will see.
Yes, it worked, had a feeling it must be something simple. Hadn't used external HD in a LONGGGG time, so it likely needed a scan. Thanks for the support all. LQ rocks as usual !!!
