trying to get imap to work

I rebuilt my PC from scretch and installed Linux RedHat 7.3 and imap package that comes with with distribution.
Here is the problem that I have:
When I try to run telnet localhost imap I get the message:
OK [CAPABILITY IMAP4REV1 LOGIN-REFERRALS STARTTLS AUTH=LOGIN] localhost.localdomain IMAP4rev1 2001.315rh at Fri, 22 Aug 2003
I spent a whole week trying to get this to work and I am still getting the same message. I tried googling and any other forums that I found but no luck. Like I said ended up rebuilding the PC so I can start fresh without anything else.
I am willing to do anything just to get this thing to work.
I did enable imap service in xinetd.d directory and checked the /etc/services file to make sure that port 143 is uncommented.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I don't get a server ready message after running telnet localhost imap command so that I can login. I don't think that my imap server is running.
