tar reliability

How reliable is tar when it comes to backups? I need to make sure that my files won't be corrupted, and I just read a post that tar become unreliable at high file sizes? My backups are only totaling around 1 gig, but they will grow, is tar going to suffice? I do use compression.

The tar program itself is very reliable. I believe there is a 2Gig limitation per file (not backup), so you should be ok. To verify the data, you can always run "tar -tvf file.tar" if you want to be 100% sure about it.
