tar problem with backed up home directory

Hi,

2 questions, sort of.

#1) I got myself a new HDD and decided to re-install RH9 on the new drive. Before I did, I tried to backup my home directory by running

tar -cvf nameoffile.tar *

This worked, except I noticed that it didn't back up hidden files. So I re-ran the command, replacing "*" with ".*". This seems to have worked, and I even tested it once or twice in test directories before I sent it to an FTP server on my LAN.

Upon reinstallation of the OS, I imported these files over to the new box and attempted to tar -xvf filename.tar . But I got the following output:

tar: Skipping to next header
tar: Archive contains obsolescent base-64 headers
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors

When it does this, it shows only 1 or 2 files in the entire 1.7GB tar file.

Is there any way for me to salvage these archives, or are they hosed?

#2) I still have the old RH9 installation on a hard drive that is outside the system. How would you suggest I mount it from the new RH9 installation once I put it back in the system?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Dave

Okay, I fixed it by adding the old HDD to the system. The odd thing is that when I added the old HDD as a slave on the 2nd IDE channel, it took over as the default boot image and booted me into my old install of RH9. I found that kinda' freaky.

Nevertheless, I was able to mount my new RH9 install from within the old install and just copy all the files over using Konquerer. Easy as pie.
